Sculpting is an art and science of it's own. But the sculpture can be used as reference for comic artists and illustrators (often used by James Gurney for paleo art). Maquettes have been produced for years as a sort of 3-D model sheet for animators. Locally we have Sam Greenwell who produces sculptures for both toy makers and finished pieces for comic companies.
